I thought I'd pass along a few shortcuts. Sure wish I'd known about these from early days. Please add any that you've come up with.
Once you've made a door or window, it's highly likely you'll need another of the same dimensions. Instead of extruding and starting over, just choose the existing door/window sector, move your cursor to the general area where the new one is needed, and hit the insert button. Voila. New door/window.
This one follows the above. Okay, assuming you've already defined where the door/window is going to be by dividing existing walls. You can easily locate the vertices and move your door/window into place. Just select the new sector, hit spacebar, then switch to vertex mode. Poof. All vertices in the new sector are chosen and the target vertices are visible for alignment. Don't forget to backspace out of multi-select.
Variation on the one above: Choose new sector - spacebar - wall mode - a. Both are now adjoined. This is even more useful when making an actual door. All 3 walls are adjoined quickly. I've used this to adjoin the entire exterior of buildings at one go.
Another variation: So now you need to move the door a foot or two: Choose sector, spacebar, wall mode. Then grab the other two walls associated with the door. Move it all at one time, not having to come back to move the other vertices. Careful. If another sector needs to be added, start over and get all sectors first before adding walls to the multi-selection. Going back to sector mode adds all sector walls associated with the already selected additional walls. I've used this to move entire constructed areas when I've needed to enlarge a building. Just gotta make sure sectors are added first before coming back to grab additional walls.
Really just an extension of the first one: You've made a building and now need another with similar dimensions, etc. Multi-select the sectors to be duplicated. Move cursor to general area where the new construction will be - hit insert. There are all the new areas to be modified. This one has been a real timesaver for Bannack, with all the similarly shaped buildings.
Ever needed to know the entire length/width of something that is broken up by doors, windows, etc? Trash the calculator. Choose a random existing sector (doors/windows work nicely) Insert a new sector and stretch it out to follow the line to be measured, choose the appropriate wall and check its length. Then just delete the unneeded sector. I've used this one a lot in Bannack, due to needing precise dimensions for accurately creating the textures for the buildings.
Got other tricks? Pass them on.
